David Montwé, Assistant Professor

Dr. David Montwé is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forest Resources Management at the University of British Columbia. After a BSc in Forest Management, he completed a PhD and a MSc in Forest Science at the University of Freiburg, Germany. His work focuses on silviculture and climate change, with the objective to identify interventions that can increase robustness of forests to abiotic disturbances.

Fleur Damen, PhD-Student (September 2021 – present)

Before the start of my doctoral research at UBC, I obtained a MSc degree in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. In my research, I’m always looking to create and share knowledge on nature conservation issues, and I am especially interested in the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the environment. I am currently studying realized-gain trials of Douglas fir and aim to understand how genetic selection and planting density can influence Douglas fir resilience to episodes of drought and frost. As forests are subject to a rapidly changing climate, these research outcomes can guide forest management interventions to help build resilient forests for generations to come.

Sara Leslie, MSc-student (May 2024 – April 2026)

Audrey works on the resilience of residual trees and regeneration to drought after partial cutting treatments.

Alumni

Sirajul Mustafa, MSc-Student (September 2021 – December 2023)

Mustafa completed his BSc in Biology from Howard University, Washington, DC. He completed his research on climate change, mixed forest ecology, and climate adaptation.

Leizhu (Judy) Chen, Research Assistant, (Work Learn, October 2022 – April 2023)

Leizhu is a 4th year Forestry student, majoring in Forest Resource Management. Her responsibilities include field work, preparation of tree-ring samples, and data analysis with R.

Xinyu (Yunica) Wang, Research Assistant (Work Learn, October 2022 – April 2023)

Xinyu is a 4th year Forestry student, with a major  in Forest Resource Management. Her responsibilities include field work, preparation of tree-ring samples, and data analysis with R.

Vaniartha Vaniartha, Research Assistant (Work Learn, May 2021 – August 2021)

Vania is a 3rd year Natural Resources Conservation BSc-student, majoring in Global Perspectives. She worked on susceptibility of Douglas-fir from a mild climate to frost using a climate records from 1900 to 2018. She also advanced her skills in R, R-Markdown and Git.

Audrey Standish, Research Assistant (Work Learn, September 2020 – May 2021)

Audrey worked on tree rings from a retention experiment in the interior of BC. After finishing her BSc-degree in Forest Resources Management, she works on regeneration dynamics in the Sequoia National Forest, California, USA.
